| Chaplin Park - Hilton Head |
Over the years, Chaplin Community Park has been plagued by rashes of car break-ins and vandalism, giving it the hightest property crime rate of any public park on Hilton Head Island.
Law enforcement officers tried putting warnings on cars that were either unlocked or had valuables in plain view. The program was stopped when the brightly colored tags became bullseyes for "smash and garb" thieves, who moved in to "patrol" the lot after deputies had left.
And when graffiti shows up on restrooms and concession stands, town workers quickly paint over it so other taggers won't follow suite.
